Australia Day in Parramatta 2017
Australia Day, however you recognise it, is a day off from work and a chance to get out in the gorgeous weather we have been having here in Sydney. It’s a chance to have a big old barbecue and listen to the Triple J Hottest 100 and celebrate all the amazing opportunities we have here in Western Sydney and in Australia. The City of Parramatta has a great reputation for hosting one of the hottest parties in Sydney, with their annual Australia Day celebration being touted as one of the best ways to listen to some of the best local music that Western Sydney has to offer.
Bring out your family with plenty of kid’s activities, workshops and amusement rides. On The Crescent Stage from 10-4 there are stories being told, musicians, parades and faeries all coming out to make this the best day out for all the family. There’s vintage cars, bike rides, walking tours, water wheels… everything and plenty of it to keep the kids happy and entertained for the whole day!
The team behind Welcome Studio will be out on the day, bringing a bevvy of talented artists to come and paint beautiful murals all over the walls in the park. These guys work with artists to support and welcome asylum seekers and refugees through the production and sale of their art – make sure you make new Australia’s welcome, after all we were all new at some point.
Parramatta is also playing host to a bunch of ‘Big Stuff’ – similar to the Big Pineapple, Big Merino or Big Prawn, all uniquely Australian icons – including the biggest hot air balloon sky display and the Big Barbecue to feed us all under the shade of not-quite a Coolabah tree.
As the sun starts to get low on the horizon, the local music begins with the best in pop, rock and hip-hop live on the stage from 4:30. Local blokes, (well, Blue Mountains – but we’ll claim ‘em!) Thundamentals will be hanging out and sharing their iconic Australian hip-hop (no American accents here) ahead of their new album release in February. You can’t get much fresher than that.
The Hottest 100 stage is an all-ages party, hosting more local talent. Discovered by the Triple J Unearthed program in 2016, FRO-YO will be hanging out with their John Hughes lovin’, indie-pop sounding vibes. We saw them opening up The Plot Festival in 2016 and loved their sense of fun on stage – one not to be missed! Also hitting the stage is HURST who made up of a few Penrith locals (formerly of the Waffle Co. Cafe) that left to concentrate on their music and are now clearly killing it. They have a gritty, alt-rock sound guaranteed to make your head bang and force your rock fingers up.
End the night with a BANG with the annual fireworks display, designed to delight everyone from the littlest of kids to the biggest of adults with colour, lights and smells filling the air. No matter where you are from, fireworks make us all feel like children again as we marvel at the big whirlies, the little fizzers and the shocks and surprises that only a beautiful fireworks display can bring.
There really is nothing we love more than locals hangin’ local so if you’re living in Western Sydney, around Parramatta for the day or want to be hanging out with some of the best, head on down to Parramatta Park and have an amazing day in the sunshine, celebrating where we all are and what an amazing place it is that we are living in!
