Africultures Festival 2018
March 10th 2018 marked the 10th year of Africultures Festival, a celebration of African culture in Australia. The festival was established to celebrate all things Africa, from sport (the Africultures cup was taken out by Ghana this year), to fashion, food and music. This huge one day event brings the best of Africa to Western Sydney, served up with a side of Australian flavour.
Run by a committee of volunteers, the Africultures team is headed up by director and camera-shy driving force Fatma Mohamed. The festival is more than just a great event, it’s a chance for African-Australians to gather and celebrate their roots and to feel a sense of community. It’s also an opportunity for Australians of non-African background to connect with a group that is often afforded little positive exposure in the media and have to have a positive experience with African peoples and culture, and to learn more about the vast and varied continent that is Africa.
Africultures is an intoxicating mixture of sounds, smells and sights with spontaneous dance offs, a selection of food you will find nowhere else in the country and a electric feeling of joy in the air. Missed out this year? Enjoy a visual trip of images captured on the day and mark the second Saturday of March, 2019 in your calendar right now!
This is a really soulful, community based festival!! We don’t care about the colour of your skin. everyone is welcome at Africultures and a trip to Western Sydney is a lot closer than Africa.
