The Westies are thrilled to speak to Sharon Levy from The Haven, a women’s refuge located in Penrith, who received her lightbulb moment thanks to Yvonne Keane from The Hills Women’s Shelter. With only 50% of domestic violence sufferers being able to find a home – and that’s a conservative estimate considering a huge number of incidents go unreported , Sharon was left asking the question – where do the other 50% go and what could she do to help?  Continue Reading

Amna Karra-Hussan – Auburn Giants

When Amna Karra-Hussan decided she wanted to play AFL there was one issue that would stop most people in their tracks – no women’s AFL team existed in Western Sydney. Not seeing it as an issue, Aman decided to start her own and is now President of the Auburn Giants who have just entered their seventh season with all signs pointing towards a premiership for the club in the not too distant future. On a chilly autumn evening The Westies stopped by a training session to chat with one of the most warm, endearing and motivated people you are likely to meet. Western Sydney Rollers

Most evenings at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre in Cambridge Park you can find men and women playing basketball, but on Thursday and Sunday evenings it is taken over by The Western Sydney Rollers an amazing bunch of women (and a few men) and transformed into a Roller Derby arena. When I turned up a few weeks ago I expected a rough and tumble kind of sport but Roller Derby is anything but.  It is actually all about skill and a whole lot of safety.
